Everybody should know that WCC has a club-based Ride With GPS account.
If you don’t know about this or just haven’t gotten around to enrolling, read this
! And send me an email if you want to enroll. It is FREE.
We now have 150 members enrolled in the account and 340 routes in the WCC RWGPS route library.
Remember the library is publicly accessible here: https://ridewithgps.com/organizations/80-westchester-cycle-club/routes
This link is on the club website, under Cue Sheets from the navigation bar on the left (Ride Leaders, please check here first for your routes and use these links when posting your rides on the website).
Several people have asked me if they should renew their paid RWGPS account or just use the free club-based account.
The answer is, that depends, but let’s take a look at what you gain and what you lose with only a club-based RWGPS account.
The club-based membership is the same as having a free account with the addition of access to the phone app for voice navigation. This is huge for those of us who do not own Garmins. I feel very strongly that voice navigation is a major safety upgrade from a printed cue sheet. I advise anyone that does not have a Garmin to get enrolled in the club RWGPS account so you can use the phone app.
The club account has a separate RWGPS library and the app can only be used with those routes. We have been working diligently behind the scenes to be sure that any routes that appear on the ride board are in the club library so the voice navigation is available to all members for all club rides. We now have over 300 routes in the library. So if you decided to ride a club route but not as an official club ride, you would still be able to use the app because the route is in the club library. But if you went on a trip somewhere that was not a WCC event, you would not be able to use your club account to get those routes into your phone because those routes will not be in the club library.
This is where a paid/premium RWGPS account has an advantage. You can use the navigation app for any route in your individual account, as well as the club account. The other advantage is access to advanced editing features.
If you are using a Garmin
, then, as far as I can tell, the only thing you are gaining with a paid account is advanced editing.
There is one other consideration…. The people at RWGPS have been awesome and super helpful to me and any members who arehaving difficulty learning how to coordinate their RWGPS accounts with their phones, etc.
They deserve our support.
Any members who are using their RWGPS accounts(free or paid, with or without Garmins) and have a different perspective or think I have missed something, please let me know!
This is still a work in progress.
